Facebook Ad formats: what are they and why are they important? And more importantly, which ad format is the best for driving quality conversions for your community?

As you might expect, that all depends on your goals and the creative you have available. A quick list of the most common formats are Single Image, Single Video, and Carousel Ads. Now, you might look at that list and think it’s a little small, especially when you compare it to another platform like Google where you can run creative across Google Search, Google Display, and even YouTube. I hear you, but trust me, using just these three ad formats will probably cover 99.9% of all your Facebook Ads needs. (Plus, ad placements are a totally different discussion!)

Let’s break down each ad format and discuss the pros and cons of each one.

Ad Format #1: Single Image Ads: Simplicity at Its Best

Single Image Ads are most likely what you think of when you think of a Facebook Ad. This classic format is all about impact through simplicity. A single, striking image of a serene courtyard or a happy resident can convey a lot. These are often the easiest creatives to put together for most communities as they can use photos from events, photos of their community (both indoors and outdoors), as well as portraits of smiling residents engaging in community activities. If your senior living community is new and you do not have access to creatives like these ones, you can get started with stock photos (if absolutely necessary) until you can get images of your own to use.

Pros of Single Image Ads:

  • Simplicity: Easy to produce and straightforward.
  • Cost-Effective: Lower production costs compared to videos and carousels.

Cons of Single Image Ads:

  • Limited Storytelling: Less room for narrative compared to videos or carousels.
  • Dependence on One Image: The entire message hinges on one photo’s effectiveness.

Ad Format #2: Single Video Ads: Bring Your Community to Life

Next, we have Video Ads. Video Ads are fantastic for storytelling and capturing attention as users scroll through their feeds. Using video allows you to bring your community to life by showing your staff in action, having residents and their families share their testimonials, and helping prospects see what day-to-day life looks like in your community.

If your community has the budget, a great way to use video effectively is to create short 15-30-second lifestyle-type videos that break down every level of care you offer as well as all of your amenities. Here are a few real-life examples to inspire your creative vision:

  • A video showcasing your Memory Care neighborhood and what services are offered to those residents. Footage could show staff interacting with residents, residents interacting with each other, and your memory care director talking about everything that sets your community’s program apart from the rest.
  • A video talking about how much care is put into the food preparation complete with comments from the kitchen staff about how deeply they care for the residents, a quick tour walking through the kitchen and seeing everyone in action, and a waiter serving dinner to residents.
  • A video talking about how important health, wellness, and a focus on longevity are to your community complete with footage of your residents in a yoga or water aerobics class, your instructor(s) talking about the types of programs they create, and how much joy it brings them to see residents thriving in your community.

Video ads can be a fantastic way to share all of this information in an engaging, easy-to-digest, and easily sharable with friends and family. And if those reasons aren’t enough, using Video Ads is also one of the best ways to be able to track user engagement for retargeting purposes. More on that in a future blog post!

Pros of Video Ads:

  • Engagement: Videos are highly engaging and can boost interaction.
  • Shareable: Videos can be easily shared with family and friends.
  • Emotional Connection: Real-life moments and vibrant atmospheres resonate deeply with viewers.

Cons of Video Ads:

  • Production: High production costs and the need for mobile optimization.
  • Clarity: It’s crucial to ensure your message is clear and concise.

Ad Format #3: Carousel Ads: A Virtual Tour Right in Your Ad

Single Image and Single Video Ads can take you 90% of the way, but sometimes you are looking for something a little different. This is where Carousel Ads come in handy. Using this ad format allows you to showcase multiple images or videos in a single ad that are swipe-able by the user, allowing you to perfectly marry creating engagement with being informative.

A fantastic example of using Carousel ads is if you want to offer a mini-slideshow of your community, show images of different floorplans that you have available, or show a list of nearby communities. The power of this ad format is that when it comes to showcasing information that you would typically feature in a list format; the sky is truly the limit.

Pros of Carousel Ads:

  • Versatility: Showcase different aspects of your community.
  • Engagement: The interactive nature encourages users to swipe through.
  • Storytelling: Offers a multi-faceted view of life in your community.

Cons of Carousel Ads:

  • Complexity: Requires careful planning and organization to avoid a cluttered look.
  • Cost: Higher production costs if you’re creating unique content for each card.
  • Analytics: There isn’t an easy way to see what cards are getting the most engagement allowing you to further optimize.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

As we’ve seen, each ad style has its strengths and weaknesses. If you want to use Facebook Ads to increase quality conversions for your community, the key is to match the ad style with your campaign or ad goals and most importantly; the story you want to tell in your ad. Choosing the right ad style is just one piece of the puzzle. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Single Image Ads: Best for simple, impactful messages that highlight key features.
  • Video Ads: Perfect for creating an emotional connection and bringing your senior living community to life.
  • Carousel Ads: Ideal for a comprehensive look at different aspects of your community.

By selecting the right format and crafting engaging content, you can increase prospects’ interest in your community and engagement with your ads.

And remember, as we’ve talked about in other blog posts, every great ad starts with a clear understanding of your audience and a well-defined strategy. So go ahead, take the time to plan, and watch your engagement grow!
